Every month up to 8,000 ELVs are shipped to West Africa from the port of Antwerp. Usually these cars no longer meet the Belgian standards in terms of emission, rust… Two young artists, Tamara Van San and Lode Geens bought themselves a “multiple-hand” car, and then shipped themselves and the car from Antwerp to Dakar. They then travelled back to Antwerp over land with their vehicle.
They documented their journey with slides, film and text. Upon their return, the two artists spent several months working on creating a new artistic work (sculptures, drawings…) with new material, which they encountered and collected en route and so on.
From the end of October until the end of December all of this will be exhibited in the exhibition space of the Zuiderpershuis world culture centre.
"The world is a village by the sea. We think that we know every corner and the rooms in the houses in this village. We see them on TV and on the Internet. And yet every place is quite different from its representation”.
(Jef Lambrecht, VRT journalist)
"Tamara Van San and Lode Geens spent a few weeks as “slow port” artists in a “rough travelling performanc”.
