Braem was closely involved in the Middelheim Museum’s development from its inception as a result of his ambition to integrate architecture with art.
After designing a provisional pavilion in 1963 for the 7th Sculpture Biennial, the Antwerp town council asked him to design a permanent pavilion that same year, to be built in the park where vulnerable items in the collection could be exhibited. The pavilion was built and inaugurated in 1971.
This exhibition showcased a selection of the hundreds of drawings that Braem made, in the pavilion itself. They show how the concept evolved step by step and which formal and constructive issues the architect had to tackle. Above all, however, they highlight Renaat Braem’s intuitive creative skill as an architect and his virtuoso draughtsmanship.
Lectures were organised in collaboration with Amarant in the margin of this exhibition.
